This was an interesting sideline on the trip. The college had an ecovillage. All it is really is student housing, but they are trying anyway. They have energy efficient apartments around a central courtyard where they have gardens and a playground. They have some solar electric and solar hot water. There is a cob building the students put up and also a strawbale structure. They also started off with a living machine for greywater which is a greenhouse where the greywater is run through a series of tanks with plants and bacteria in them until the water is clean. That is now a aquaponics system because some of the students were more careful than others about what they put down the drain and they kept killing off the plants and bacteria that make the system work. I’ve read about these systems and they really work.
